The 2024 United States elections are underway on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. This presidential election year includes the selection of the president and vice president, with the next presidential election scheduled for 2028. Additionally, voters will decide all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and 34 of the 100 seats in the Senate, shaping the 119th Congress. Thirteen state and territorial governorships, along with various other state and local offices, are also up for election.

When is the US Election 2024 presidential election result expected?

According to BBC the first polls close at 6:00 PM EST (11:00 PM GMT) on Tuesday evening, with the last polls closing at 1:00 AM EST (6:00 AM GMT) early Wednesday.

In some past presidential elections, the winner has been announced late on election night or early the following morning. However, given the close competition across several states this year, media outlets may delay their projections.

Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and former Republican President Donald Trump have been in a tight race for weeks. Narrow margins could also lead to recounts.

For instance, in Pennsylvania—a crucial swing state—a recount is mandatory if the difference between the top two candidates is within half a percentage point. In 2020, the margin was slightly over 1.1 percentage points.

What is Electoral Vote in United States? How many are required to win?

In the United States, the Electoral College is the body that formally elects the president and vice president. Each state is allocated a certain number of “electoral votes” based on its representation in Congress (the total of its Senate and House seats). There are 538 total electoral votes, and a candidate needs a majority of at least 270 electoral votes to win the presidency.

When voters cast their ballots for president, they are actually voting for a slate of electors pledged to their candidate. These electors then cast the formal votes for president and vice president in December. The candidate with the majority of electoral votes (270 or more) becomes the next president.
